LE PETIT BONHEUR

Growing up my mom had 2 framed quotes hanging on our kitchen walls. I remember reading them often and have found myself thinking about them years later.

"A man should hear a little music, read a little poetry, and see a fine picture every day of his life, in order that worldly cares may not obliterate the sense of the beautiful which God has implanted in the human soul."
~Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

"The people who fail to meet the stresses and strains of life are often those who have never learned to cherish what the French call la petit bonheur - the little happiness - when it comes along. It is too bad; for most lives hold little that is dramatic and overwhelming. But every day has its quota of le petit bonheur." ~Ardis Whitman

And so to list some of my little happinesses: (Food will have to be a list all by itself) My Angelbabe and the 4 little Angels he gave me. The smell of orange blossoms. Dessert. Feeling the warm sun on my face. Getting my little boy out of his crib in the morning. The moment when my husband gets home. Reading a good book. An Arizona sunset. Bedtime. The smell of fresh laundry. A finished project. A visit with a friend. Handwritten letters. Thunderstorms. Snuggling. Anticipating a trip. Reading a book to my kids. Music. Laughing. Hot baths. Weekends with Spouse home. The smell of rain coming. Sunday mornings. Hearing my daughter call her dad, "mauddie." Family pictures. Quiet. Being outside and feeling a cool breeze. Phone calls with my Mom. Afternoons in the park. Package in the mail. Smiles. Soft carpet. Dinner together. Family games. Coming Home.

What are some of your little happinesses?

The smell of oregano. The song "Pie Jesu." Bright blue watercolor on good paper. Wearing an apron. The memory of a time I said something brilliant. The moment when I put my head on my pillow at night. Fun socks. Picking up developed photographs. My husband's face when I make an impressive dinner. A soft blanket and a good book. A cold glass of milk. The smell of a mowed lawn. A really clever pun.

My little happinesses... spending time with my husband. Reading a good book. My freshly scrubbed grout in the kitchen. An organized silverware drawer. The smell of orange blossoms. Basil on my eggs. Eating from my own garden. Or my parent's garden. Emma and Derrick both taking naps at the same time. Kids coming home from school on the bus. Kids homework all done and having fun family time. Having visitors. Reading my friends' blogs.

Having the whole house clean at once. A fresh batch of ironing, done. Cool mornings. Flowers in my yard. Hearing my kids say I love you, unprompted. The quiet time after I put my kids to bed and before Spouse gets home. Lip gloss.
